3rd Grade Spelling and Grammar Program 2009-2010

Our 3rd grade spelling program is made up of about 200 high frequency words in French. The list is broken up into 18 sub-lists (A to R) of about 10 words each. The lists are grouped by topic or associated words. Students are expected to be able to spell all of the words correctly by the end of the school year.

Students started with an assessment on all words at the beginning of the year. Then each student received a copy of the list to keep at school to use as a reference while writing. One copy of the complete list is attached to this letter. Other copies can by found on the back of students’ communication folders, and on the 3rd grade teachers’ websites. Also on the website, there are audio files of a native speaker reading the lists. Students can listen to the list and practice taking each spelling test at home.

Our goal extends beyond the mere spelling of these words; we wish for students to be able to correctly use these words in context. Therefore, the focus each week in the classroom is on the grammar connected to the words. Students will be expected to listen to an example sentence, apply the grammar rules learned that week, and correctly spell the word.

Spelling tests will usually take place each Friday, however, there are only 18 lists. On most shorter weeks (such as Thanksgiving week), there will be no official spelling list, and we will focus on reviewing or previewing grammar rules. We expect to complete the 18 lists by Spring Break, after which, we will focus on French verb conjugation.

The 3rd grade teachers may not advance at the same pace. Each of us will inform you via newsletter of the list his/her class is working on. Please never hesitate to contact your child’s teacher about the spelling program. Let’s make it a successful year!

Also, you will find a wav file for each sub-list with a native French speaker reading all of the words and practice phrases.

Hint:  Students can pause the recording between words if the text is too fast.

Have fun!
