The family
As part of the first grade social studies curriculum this year we would like to complete a service-learning project. St. Paul Public Schools defines service-learning as “A teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” Service learning provides students with an opportunity to both meet academic goals and make a difference in their community.

Part of the first grade social studies curriculum focuses on the family. Mme Taleb has been mentoring a newly arrived refugee family from Myanmar (Burma) who lives about five miles from our school. There are five members in this family, including the father, mother, twin girls (age 7), a son (age 4) and a  baby son (13 months). They have many immediate and long-term needs, such as food and necessities. We would like to complete a service-learning project in order to help meet this family’s needs.

Here are some of the service projects we will be completing this year:

Spare Change Collection: Nov. 2-Nov. 12, 2009. Please collect spare change in a plastic bag. By Thursday, Nov. 12th students will return the boxes to school and the money will be given to the family in the form of grocery, Target or bus cards.

Food and Necessities Drive: March 1-12, 2010. More information to come.

Spring Picnic with the Family: Spring 2010. To be determined.

Please see the attached page describing in-class activities, service projects, and academic standards that we will be meeting. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to talk with your child’s classroom teacher.
