| | | | | Focus on the Family | | | | The Family | As part of the first grade social studies curriculum this year we would
like to complete a service-learning project. St. Paul Public Schools
defines service-learning as “A teaching and learning approach that
integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning,
teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” Service
learning provides students with an opportunity to both meet academic
goals and make a difference in their community.
Mme Taleb
has been mentoring a newly arrived refugee family from Myanmar (Burma)
who live about five miles from our school. There are six members in
this family, including the father, mother, twin girls (age 6), a son
(age 4) and a new baby boy. They have many immediate and
long-term needs such as clothing and food. We would like to complete a
service-learning project in order to help meet this family’s needs.
Here are the service projects we will be completing this year:
Spare
Change Collection: Nov. 2 - Nov. 12: Please collect spare change in a plastic bag. By Thursday, Nov. 12th students will return the collected change to school, and the money will be given to
the family in the form of grocery, Target or bus gift cards.
Food and Necessities Drive: March 1 - 12, 2010 More info to come!
Spring Celebration: Spring 2010 Please
see the attached page describing in-class activities, service projects,
and academic standards that we will be meeting. If you have any
questions or feedback, please feel free to talk with your child’s
classroom teacher.
